On April 9, we kicked off FestivAL100 in Germany with a screening of the film *Diamonds of the Night*, followed by a discussion. We would like to thank the Czech-German Future Fund for its financial and moral support. Consul General Ivona Valhová introduced the program with wit and flair:

Dear Mrs. Lustigová, ladies and gentlemen,
it is a great honour and pleasure for me to welcome you here today in Weimar.
I have travelled here from Dresden, where the Consulate General of the Czech Republic is based and which is responsible not only for Saxony, but also for Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt.
There could be no more fitting place here in Germany to open the AL100 festival, which is taking place to mark the 100th birthday of the eminent Czech writer Arnošt Lustig. Weimar, as a centre of culture and humanism yet situated in the immediate vicinity of one of the largest concentration camps, embodies in a unique way the tensions that also characterise Lustig’s work.
Pain and suffering as part of human life are central themes for Lustig — and also in the film Diamonds of the Night, which we will be watching together this evening. I recall an interview in which Arnošt Lustig said that, despite the unimaginable suffering, he is above all interested in stories in which people are better at the end than at the beginning. And that even in the greatest horrors, a spark of hope always remains. This message is of particular significance right now, during the ongoing Easter season.

Schmerz und Leid als Teil des menschlichen Lebens sind zentrale Themen für Lustig — und auch im Film Diamanten der Nacht, den wir heute Abend gemeinsam sehen werden. Ich erinnere mich an ein Interview, in dem Arnošt Lustig sagte, dass ihn trotz des unvorstellbaren Leidens vor allem Geschichten interessieren, in denen Menschen am Ende besser sind als am Anfang. Und dass selbst in den größten Schrecken immer ein Funken Zuversicht bleibt. Diese Botschaft ist gerade jetzt, in der noch andauernden Osterzeit, von besonderer Bedeutung.
